II Part

Juanita: Hello, excuse me! Niña Angeles. They sent me to ask you if you wanted to go to la misa with them?
Angeles: Misa? Ah! no sabia que eran catolicos?
Juanita: No, no son catolicos. Son protestantes. Que les digo? Que va o no?
Angeles: Si, me baño y voy para abajo. Gracias Juanita.

At the kitchen table?

Claire: Hi Angeles, good morning.
Joseph: Hello Angeles. Come sit at the table. We have eggs, bacon, orange juice. Just have whatever you want.
Stephanie: Bacon, yuck! You don?t eat bacon, unless you want to become fat like my dad.
Claire: Oh Steph, your dad is not fat. After today?s service, we?ll be going to the country club. Would you like to join us Angeles?
Angeles: Sure, I?d love to.
Daniel: Hi everyone. Hey, I invited Andy to come with us. Can Lou go pick him up?
Joseph: Sure. Tell him to bring his golfing clothes. We?re going to the country club after service.
Daniel: Oh, dad! You know we don?t like golfing. That?s for old people.
Claire: The Swanson twins will be there.
Daniel: So? I see them all the time at school.
Steph: Since when the twins attend public school?!
Daniel: They don?t. They just come by to see me.
Claire: Daniel is a Casanova with the girls, Angeles. He?s always been so good-looking and so smart. I don?t understand why you wanted to change schools Daniel. You were so happy at the academy.
Daniel: Mom, please. Don?t start with that again. I just wanted more freedom. I was sick and tired of uniforms and rules. Anyways, I need to go with Lou to pick up Andy. See you later family!
Claire: Andy? What?s his last name, Joseph?
Joseph: Don?t worry Claire. His uncle is president of a fortune 500. That?s all it matters, right?
Claire: Don?t say that Joseph. Angeles is going to think I?m only interested in money.
Stephanie: Oh mom. You know you are.
Claire: Oh sweetie, don?t say that.
Angeles: Can I ask you something?
Joseph: Sure.
Angeles: What do you do for a living?
Joseph: Oh, I own a consulting firm. I just retired last year, and Claire does fundraising. What?s your new title honey?
Claire: I?m director of development at a charity organization.
Angeles: Oh, that?s nice.
Joseph: What do your parents do for a living?
Angeles: They run a hotel in our town. We get a lot of tourism in our beaches so it?s a very good business.
Claire: That?s very nice, and what are you planning to do in the future? Take over the hotel?
Angeles: No, I like to paint. But I?m not sure about being an artist. There?s no much future for it in Colombia. My parents want me to become a doctor, but I don?t know about that either. I?ll probably decide that after I go back to Colombia.
Stephanie: I don?t know why anyone would want to be an artist unless she owns an art gallery in New York.
Joseph: Stephanie wants to be an actress or a model, right Stephanie?
Stephanie: Yeah, I?ll be actually taking acting and modeling classes after school. You can come if you want to.
Angeles: Sure, I?d like that. How did you get involved with the exchange program?
Stephanie: One of my friends at the charity told me about it, and I thought it would be a nice opportunity in case Daniel or Stephanie wants to travel.
Stephanie: If I ever do that, I?d like to go to Paris or Milan, the fashion capitals of the world.
Angeles: How old are you Stephanie?
Stephanie: I?m 16.
Angeles: Oh, I think you can start the program next year. I?m 17, and I started the application process last year. Of course, I was hoping for a scholarship.
Daniel: Dad, Lou is ready with the car. Let?s go!
Stephanie: Lou is our chuffer. He?s only around till 6 or 7 everyday. After that, if you want to go somewhere, you gotta ask for the car.
Angeles: O.k.

At the car?

Joseph: I bought this car last year, because Claire insisted on going places together as a family so this is the kind of car that can fit a family of four. I personally prefer my sports cars. Did you see them in the garage Angeles?
Angeles: No, I didn?t have the opportunity.
Joseph: Oh they are my babies, but Claire doesn?t like me driving around in those, and the kids are strictly forbidden to take them anywhere. I?ll show them to you when we get back from the club.
Angeles: Ok, great.
Stephanie: Hi Andy.
Andy: Hey Steph?who?s your friend?
Stephanie: Oh that?s the new exchange student who came to our house.
Andy: Does she have a name?
Stephanie: Oh yeah?it?s umm?L.A?umm? Angeles
Andy: Oh strange name?where is she from?
Stephanie: I forgot! No, wait?that country that?s always in the news. You know with the drug lords and everything.
Andy: (looking puzzled) there are a few countries like that, but I?m going to guess Colombia.
Daniel: Hey dude?why don?t you ask her yourself?
Andy: maybe later

Outside the church?

Claire: Oh hi Amanda, where?s your husband?
Joseph: Hi Amanda, are you heading to the club after this?
Amanda: Yes, of course, they are already in the car with the twins. I?ll see you there, ok.
Claire: So Angeles, did you like our service?
Angeles: Oh you mean?mass. Yeah, it was different, but nice.
Claire: Oh yes, it must be very different from the kind of service you are accustomed to. I mean you have all these saints and all these marvelous decorations at the Catholic churches and everything is so traditional. I don?t know how you can do it, but I love this church. It?s so nice. Let?s go dear?we need to get to the club in time for lunch.
Angeles: O. K.

At the Country Club?

Claire: I?m going to have lunch with Amanda and my friends. You guys go do what you have to do, but don?t interrupt me?please.
Joseph: Hey George?ready to play golf? Let?s go?do any of you want to come along?
Daniel: No dad?I told you. That?s for old people. Andy and I are going to go to the bar.
Joseph: Right. Don?t get in trouble guys. See you in a few hours.
Andy: So where we going dude?
Daniel: Babe in small bikini at three o? clock.
Stephanie: what?
Andy: He means by the pool.
Stephanie: Oh the twins are there?hey guys wait!
Jessica: Hi Daniel
Jennifer: Hey Andy
Daniel: Hey girls?what are you doing?
Jessica: Nothing?just getting my last non-fake tan of the summer.
Stephanie: Hey Jessica, hey Jennifer.
Jess & Jen: Hi Steph!
Jen: Hey who?s the new girl?
Stephanie: Remember I told you guys about the exchange student my mom wanted to bring to the house.
Jess: Oh yeah?this is her. Does she speak English?
Stephanie: Yes, I guess so. At least she understands everything I say.
Andy: She must be a genius then Steph! I mean?nobody understands a word you say.
Stephanie: Shut up Andy! You?re a moron!
Angeles: (Why are they talking like I?m not even here) Hi. I?m Angeles, how are you?
Jess: Oh hi, I?m Jessica and this is my sister Jennifer. You can call us Jess & Jenn.
Angeles: Ok, nice to meet you.
Jess: So where are you from?
Angeles: Colombia
Jess: Oh that?s in South America, right? Must be very exciting! Wow! You have beautiful skin. I?m envious.
Jen: So you came here to learn English or what?
Angeles: Yes and no?I came here for the experience. I wanted to learn more about the US.
Jen: Yes, of course?that?s nice.
Jess: Hey sit down you guys. Did you bring your swimming suit Angeles?
Angeles: No, nobody really told me what this was all about.
Jen: What do you mean? You?ve never been in a country club before.
Angeles: No, not really. I?ve only heard of them.
Jess: That?s sad?but don?t worry. We can go to my house and you can borrow one of my suits.
Stephanie: Ew! No?I mean you just met her, and with all those diseases out there?that?s gross.
Angeles: Don?t worry about it. I?ll be fine...I don?t need a tan anyways.
Jen: You know, that?s a funny accent. It?s like a mix of British and Spanish.
Angeles: My English teachers were from England.
Jen: Ok, that explains it then.
Stephanie: So guys, did you get those new bags from Marc Jacobs?
Jess: Jen got one. I just wanted something more traditional.
Stephanie: What did you get?
Jess: Gucci, nothing fancy.
Stephanie: Gucci? Isn?t that like outdated?
Jess: I like Gucci.
Stephanie: Ok, I think Marc Jacobs totally rocks. I mean the dude is a genius.

Angeles, who didn?t understand these girls? conversation, started to feel out of place and started to question whether this trip was going to be worth it or not. After a few hours of analyzing these girls? personalities, she decided they were all rich girls with no real thoughts or concerns. She thought, there?s more to life than fashion designers. Well, maybe there wasn?t much to think about in their lives, but Angeles didn?t think like that. She had already stereotyped them, just as Stephanie had already stereotyped her. She was glad to go home that night, but the best was still to come the next day when she would attend the academy with her new host sister.
